Peter Hall

I am a journalist writing about tech, computing, science, and math. I was a 2025 AAAS Mass Media Fellow, where I was embedded at MIT Technology Review reporting on AI. I have been freelancing throughout my Ph.D., and my writing has additionally appeared in Undark Magazine and Quanta Magazine. I have taken workshops and courses on topics like data journalism and tech reporting. Clips of my reporting can also be found below!

I am also a fifth year Ph.D. student studying cryptography and technology policy at New York University at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences. I am advised by Yevgeniy Dodis and Marshall Ball. I am interested in finding theoretically grounded solutions to policy problems, and my work has ranged from working on AI policy, interview studies, quantum cryptography, hash functions, and obfuscation. A list of my publications can be found below.

Before I was at NYU, I obtained a Bachelors in Mathematics and a Masters in Computer Science from the University of Connecticut, where I was fortunate to be advised by and work with Álvaro Lozano-Robledo, Keith Conrad, and Benjamin Fuller. You can see more details for other things I've done on my CV.

ATTENTION: I am on the job market, looking for full-time employment in science+tech journalism and communications, and in the intersection of technology and policy. Feel free to reach out!

Academic Publications

Note: In theoretical computer science, authorship is alphabetical. Additionally, I wrote an undergraduate thesis as part of the University Scholars program about the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis: The Generalized Riemann Hypothesis and Applications to Primality Testing.

Reporting

In my reporting so far, I've covered embargoed news, made data visualizations, written Op-Eds and profiles, and have written enterprise and single-study pieces. Some selected pieces below, and I am happy to provide more clips on request.

Teaching

I've taught algorithms (Basic = undergraduate level, Fundamental = Masters level) for most of my Ph.D. at NYU, along with other courses throughout my undergraduate. In general, I've served as both a recitation leader, teaching a supplemental session for students similar to a TA, and a course assistant, generating assignments, coordinating grading, tutoring, and other tasks.

Additionally, in Summer 2024 I served as instructor for Fundamental Algorithms at NYU as an adjunct, generating my own syllabus and lesson plans along with all assignments.

Miscellaneous

  • During my undergraduate, I served as the Editor-in-Chief of The Daily Campus, UConn's student newspaper. I also worked as an Opinion Editor and staff writer for the section, and did copyediting and design work for the News section!
  • When I am not working, I am often watching Survivor, baking, and playing board games. My favorite season of Survivor is Survivor: Philippines, my favorite thing to bake is Challah, and my favorite board game is Pax Pamir.
  • I watch a lot of Broadway and off-Broadway theater. I occassionally write about these shows on my blog Hall of Theatre.
